Millie the ‘micro-pig’ is a delight, a friendly sweetheart who has brought much joy and affection to all who have met her, like all pigs she enjoys a good belly rub and a fuss, and it is lovely to see young children interact with her.
Millie is one of our older residents here at FRIEND Farm Animal Sanctuary, she must be nearly ten years old. She came to us as a young pig that was sold on the promise of being a tiny micro pig but had just started to outgrow her promised size.
For those of you who don’t know there is no such thing as a tiny teacup sized pig unless they are baby piglets. ‘Micro-pigs’ are selectively bred to be smaller than the average pink farm pigs, but still grow to 60-200 kg obviously not tea-cupped size.
This is an all too common problem for rescues at the moment, a very sad indictment of the exaggeration of pig breeders to mislead the public and cash in on the pet industry.
Millie is a wonderful example of this problem she now weighs in at 80 kg, not what most people expect when ‘buying’ a pet teacup pig. Pigs are incredibly powerful animals who will hanker to be outdoors with other pigs and to try to keep her in a house or small garden would be nigh on impossible for she would literally destroy her surroundings by rooting with her nose.
Please don’t consider owning a micro pig, they really are not pets at all and they will grow BIG. The only silver lining to Millie’s story is that we have been lucky enough to have rehomed this beautiful girl and have the pleasure of having her here with us xx
